Why rotor material decides service life

Rotor material selection starts with the full chemical list. A 316 stainless steel rotor works on acetone, toluene, ethanol, and light hydrocarbons. The same rotor pits quickly in hot hydrochloric acid or wet chlorine service. We have seen this on customer sites in Vietnam. A paint manufacturer near Ho Chi Minh City replaced three stainless rotors in 14 months because the solvent blend contained trace chlorides. The fix was a Hastelloy C rotor and matching bearings.


Do not guess from the base fluid alone. Add trace impurities, wash solvents, and regeneration chemicals. These small streams decide corrosion rate. In one desalination chemical dosing line, the main fluid was clean water. The weekly citric acid flush attacked the rotor bearings. The meter lost repeatability after six weeks. Conductivity above 500 µS/cm can accelerate galvanic corrosion on stainless steel components, even when the pH looks mild.


Sizing data you need before selecting a rotor

Hoffer turbine meter sizing starts with five values: minimum flow rate, normal flow rate, maximum flow rate, viscosity at operating temperature, and pipe size. For chemical pipelines, we normally ask for pressure in bar, temperature in °C, and flow in kg/h or m³/h. Give us the fluid name and the pipe schedule. That is enough for a first pass.


Viscosity is the main trap. Turbine meter linearity shifts when viscosity climbs above 5 cP. Many solvents stay near 0.4 to 1.2 cP. Acetone at 20 °C runs about 0.32 cP. Ethylene glycol at 25 °C is about 16 cP. A meter sized for acetone will not read the same on glycol. If your line runs multiple products, size for the highest viscosity product, not the average.


Back pressure matters more than most people expect. For a turbine meter on a light hydrocarbon, keep enough downstream pressure to prevent cavitation. A common rule is 2.5 times the pressure drop plus 1.25 times vapor pressure. In field terms, a 1 bar drop may need at least 3 bar downstream. Common rotor materials for chemical pipelines

316 stainless steel is the default rotor for neutral and mild organic streams. It suits DN15 to DN80 lines from about 0.2 to 20 m³/h depending on size. Use it for acetone, MEK, ethanol, and light fuel oils. Avoid it with free chlorides above 50 ppm at elevated temperature.


Hastelloy C rotors fit acidic streams, chlorinated solvents, and many mixed chemical wastes. This material costs more but survives conditions that eat 316 in months. We size Hastelloy C rotors for hydrochloric acid below 15 percent concentration at ambient temperature. For hot sulfuric acid service, confirm concentration and temperature first. Hastelloy C is not a universal acid answer.


Monel rotors suit hydrofluoric acid, seawater, and some caustic streams. A desalination plant in the Middle East uses a Monel rotor on a seawater feed line because 316 pitted after six months. The flow range was 4 to 40 m³/h on a DN50 line. Monel solved the pitting.

A practical sizing walkthrough

A chemical distributor in Thailand needed a Hoffer turbine meter for a DN40 acetone line. Normal flow was 1,800 kg/h, minimum 300 kg/h, maximum 2,400 kg/h. Pressure was 4 bar, temperature 30 °C. Viscosity at that temperature was 0.32 cP. The selected meter had a 316 stainless steel rotor and tungsten carbide bearings. The 10:1 turndown covered the 300 to 2,400 kg/h range. A smaller DN25 meter would have added more pressure drop and increased bearing wear. The DN40 meter stayed inside the linear range with less velocity stress.


That example shows why matching the pipe size alone is not enough. Some engineers match the meter to the existing pipe. That approach works sometimes, but the pipe size match does not protect the rotor. A one-size-smaller meter increases velocity and may cut bearing life in half. Install the Hoffer meter with straight run upstream and downstream. Ten diameters upstream and five downstream work for most turbulent chemical flow.
