Seametrics Flow Meters: Environmental Irrigation Water Insertion Magnetic Sensors

Quick Answer: Silver Instruments makes insertion magnetic flow sensors that replace many Seametrics flow meters on irrigation and environmental water lines. Standard models cover DN80 to DN1200 pipes, handle velocities from 0.1 to 10 m/s, and provide 4-20 mA, pulse, or RS485 Modbus outputs. Send your pipe inner diameter, water conductivity, and output requirement for a same-day quote.

Engineers who run irrigation districts, pump stations, or groundwater recharge sites often see Seametrics flow meters on existing pipe runs. Silver Instruments offers a compatible insertion magnetic sensor line for these same jobs. We do not sell Seametrics branded meters. We supply a Silver Instruments alternative that matches many existing threaded taps.

The sensors install through a standard threaded tap without cutting the pipe. You can hot tap into a pressurized line or mount the sensor on a saddle fitting. Because the sensor has no moving parts, it handles sand, algae, and fertilizer residues better than paddlewheel or turbine meters. A sugar mill in Queensland replaced three paddlewheel meters on irrigation return lines with our DN400 insertion sensors last year. The cleaning interval changed from every month to every quarter.

Why Insertion Magnetic Sensors Suit Environmental Water

Environmental water monitoring covers streams, wetlands, and groundwater recharge basins. Many of these sites run on solar power. Our insertion sensors run on 24 VDC and draw less than 5 W. That makes solar panel and battery systems practical. The sensor cable is 10 m standard and 30 m optional for remote mounting.

Magnetic flow measurement works well in raw water and treated effluent because it has no moving parts to foul. The electrodes sit flush with the sensor body. This reduces wear from fine sand and silt. In most irrigation water, a 316L stainless steel electrode lasts for years. For fertilizer injection or high chloride water, we offer Hastelloy C electrodes.

Pipe Size and Fitting Compatibility

Seametrics insertion meters commonly use a 1-1/2 inch NPT or 2 inch NPT threaded tap. Silver Instruments insertion sensors use the same tap sizes. This reduces retrofit time on existing installations. The probe length adjusts for pipe sizes from DN80 to DN1200. For larger channels up to DN2000, we supply an extended stem version. You need to confirm the insertion length before ordering.

The standard sensor body is PP with 316L stainless steel electrodes. For aggressive water or fertilizer solutions, we offer Hastelloy C electrodes. Pressure rating is 16 bar. Temperature range is 0 to 60 °C. The sensor is IP68 with a sealed cable connection. The transmitter has an IP67 enclosure and can mount on a pipe stand or wall bracket. The display shows flow rate, total flow, and signal strength.

Outputs and Control Signals

Irrigation pump stations usually need a pulse output for a local controller or a 4-20 mA signal for a PLC or SCADA system. Silver Instruments offers both signals on the same transmitter board. You can also select RS485 Modbus RTU. The pulse output is configurable. You can set one pulse per 10 L, 100 L, or 1000 L. The 4-20 mA signal maps to a velocity range you set, for example 0 to 5 m/s. This keeps resolution high on low night flow.

Groundwater recharge and environmental release projects often use data loggers that accept Modbus. The RS485 output works well there. You do not need an extra converter. The transmitter stores total flow and daily flow values. A water utility in Saudi Arabia uses this function on a desert recharge basin to track monthly delivery without visiting the site every week. They read the data with a handheld Modbus reader.
