Portable Flow Meter Ultrasonic: Handheld Non-Invasive Transit Array Kits
Quick Answer: A portable ultrasonic flow meter with handheld non-invasive transit array kits measures liquid flow from outside the pipe. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these clamp-on meters for pipe sizes DN15 to DN6000 and for water, chemicals, oils and similar liquids with low gas content. Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and flow range for a quotation.
This page covers what the kit includes, how transit array mode works, where operators use it and what to check before shipping. Silver Instruments sells portable ultrasonic flow meters to distributors and end users in Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
What the Handheld Transit Array Kit Includes
Most kits ship in a foam lined hard case with a handheld transmitter, two clamp-on sensors, mounting rails, acoustic couplant, a power supply and a quick start manual. Silver Instruments can add a second sensor pair for array mode. Array mode helps on large pipe, cement lined pipe, HDPE pipe and pipe with light deposit. The handheld transmitter usually weighs about 1.2 kg and runs 8 to 12 hours on one battery charge.
Here is the thing. A portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter makes the most sense when one unit must check many lines. The sensors can move from DN50 to DN600 in a few minutes. The transmitter stores flow velocity, total flow, signal strength, date and time. A standard data logger stores 2 GB of records. The signal outputs include 4-20 mA HART, pulse and RS485 Modbus. A PT100 input is optional for heat quantity checks. An ATEX Zone 1 certified version is available for hazardous area use.
How Transit Time Array Sensors Work
The meter uses transit time ultrasonic signals. One sensor sends a signal through the pipe wall and liquid. The other sensor receives it. Flow speed changes the upstream and downstream travel time. The transmitter compares the time difference and calculates flow in m3/h, L/min, GPM or kg/h. Since the sensors sit outside the pipe, there is no pressure drop and no product contact. This matters for acids, caustic, seawater and clean process water.
In practice, most engineers skip straight to pipe parameters. You enter pipe outer diameter, wall thickness, pipe material and liner type. The transmitter calculates sensor spacing. A stable signal strength and Q value means the reading is valid. On clean steel, copper or HDPE pipe the reading settles within 30 seconds. On old pipe with heavy scale, air pockets or thick cement lining, a standard two sensor clamp-on may fail. An array sensor kit spreads the signal across a longer section of pipe and often works better.
Installation Without Cutting Pipe
Handheld non-invasive meters are used for flow surveys, pump audits, leak detection and temporary replacement of a failed meter. A technician cleans the pipe surface, applies couplant or a gel pad, fixes the rail and attaches the clamp-on sensors. There is no welding, no hot work and no line stop. One worker can install the meter in 10 to 20 minutes on a live water, fuel or chemical dosing line.
We have seen this on customer sites many times. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia used a Silver Instruments portable meter to balance four solvent lines from DN25 to DN80. A desalination plant in the Middle East checked seawater feed flow on a DN500 fiberglass pipe. A dairy processor in Australia confirmed CIP pump performance on a DN100 stainless steel line. Each of these jobs used the same handheld transmitter with different sensor pairs.
Applications by Industry
Water and wastewater plants use this kit for raw water, treated water, cooling water, seawater intake and pump performance checks. Oil and gas sites use it fo

The portable ultrasonic flow meter works well on liquids with low gas content, usually less than 3 percent volume, and suspended solids below 10000 ppm. It is not for steam, gas service or heavy slurry. For high viscosity liquids above 10000 cP, we ask for a sample test first. Unlike an electromagnetic flow meter, this device does not need conductivity. It can measure clean water below 5 µS/cm.
Model Matching and Key Specifications
Silver Instruments recommends the SUL-310 handheld clamp-on transit time meter for DN15 to DN600. For larger or difficult pipes, the SUL-330 transit array kit covers DN50 to DN6000. The standard accuracy is 1 percent of reading from DN50 and above. Repeatability is 0.2 percent. Velocity range is 0.01 to 32 m/s. Standard sensors work from -40 to 160 degrees Celsius. High temperature sensors can handle up to 200 degrees Celsius.
Pipe materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, PVC, HDPE, ductile iron and fiberglass. The pipe surface must be clean and the liquid must be full. The meter needs a straight run of 10 pipe diameters upstream and 5 diameters downstream, or it can use a two path setup on shorter runs. If the pipe is cement lined or heavily coated, specify the liner thickness and density when you send an inquiry. Most engineers skip this part and then wonder why the signal is weak. Because the signal path depends on wall thickness, wrong wall input is the most common field error.
Quote Requirements and Lead Time
We do not offer a generic web price for portable ultrasonic flow meters because sensor selection changes with pipe size, wall thickness, liquid and liner. Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), pipe material, wall thickness, liner type and flow range. We will reply with a model, sensor size, technical data sheet and quotation. Typical lead time is 5 to 10 working days for standard kits. Custom array kits may take 12 to 15 working days. So we ask for pipe schedule and liner type before shipping.

FAQ
1. Can the portable clamp-on meter measure gas or steam?
No. This meter is for liquid applications only. Use a thermal mass flow meter or vortex flow meter for gas and steam.
2. Does the array kit work on cement lined ductile iron pipe?
It depends on liner bond and liner thickness. A standard clamp-on often fails on this pipe type. The array sensor bar improves the signal, but we need the pipe drawing, liner type and wall thickness before quoting.
3. Can this portable meter be used for custody transfer or billing?
No. Use it for flow survey, pump audits, leak checks and temporary verification. For billing or custody transfer, choose an inline electromagnetic flow meter or Coriolis mass flow meter.
4. What pipe sizes can one kit measure?
One kit with small and medium sensors covers DN15 to DN300. Add large sensors to reach DN600. For DN600 to DN6000, use the array kit. We configure each kit to match the pipes on your site.
5. How do I send a quotation request?
Send your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), pipe material, wall thickness, liner type and flow range to Tel or WhatsApp. We will respond with a model selection and price.
